In this crazy world we live in, we tend to run ourselves ragged trying to keep up with all the responsibilities of life--our careers, family, home, volunteering, meal-planning/grocery shopping, scheduling/driving kids to sports and other events, cleaning, exercising and the list goes on and on.
We want to stay healthy and keep our families well. But when we’re run down and exhausted, that’s difficult to do. What’s the answer? Self-care is one of the answers. If you don’t take care of yourself, you won’t be able to care for anyone else. Self-care is not a selfish practice; it is a requirement for your health and soundness of mind.
When was the last time you gave yourself permission to pause? Let’s start today! Commit to pausing every day for at least 15 minutes and let it grow from there. Some great ways to pause include:
1. Sit down and read a book or magazine (but don’t jump up to empty the washer/dryer or check your phone!).
2. Listen to music and really take it in. Dance!
3. Watch a favorite movie and make popcorn.
4. Take a walk with nowhere to go. Walk fast or at a leisurely pace, observe the scenery, calm your mind, feel free.
5. Write in your journal – Focus on things you’re grateful for—the people in your life, your health, blessings, even challenges. Make yourself a hot cup or tea or coffee and enjoy.
6. Take a hot bath or a long shower – use some essential oils to make it feel spa-like!
7. Exercise or do some yoga poses to get your blood flowing.
8. Get a massage or ask a family member/friend to rub your neck/shoulders.
9. Set a daily time with a “no electronics, social media, or work”—use that time to meditate, nap, color or other art, or sit in nature.
10. Find a new or loved recipe and make a special meal each week. Eat slowly and mindfully and really experience and enjoy the food.
You will feel better if you take time to care for yourself. Take time today to pause and reflect. You’ll be a better you that you can share with your family and the world around you!
